Why America’s Favorite Couple Is About So Much More Than a Contest

When people hear the words America’s Favorite Couple, they often think of romance, popularity, or social media. While those things may play a role in the competition, for us this journey represents something much deeper.

It represents purpose.

For nearly 38 years, God has been writing a story through our marriage—one that has been filled with joy, perseverance, healing, forgiveness, growth, and unwavering faith. Like every couple, we have celebrated victories and walked through valleys. Yet through every season, one truth has remained constant: Christ has been the foundation of our marriage.

That foundation is why we’re still standing today.

Our story didn’t begin with a platform or a ministry. It began with two imperfect people learning how to love God’s way. Over the years, we discovered that a thriving marriage isn’t built on emotions alone. It is built on covenant, commitment, humility, forgiveness, and a willingness to grow together every day.

Those lessons changed our lives.

Eventually, we realized they could change the lives of others as well.

More than 20 years ago, God called us to establish Rich Relationships Refuge. Since then, we’ve had the privilege of coaching engaged couples preparing for marriage, encouraging couples facing difficult seasons, mentoring singles who desire healthy Christ-centered relationships, speaking in churches, appearing on television and radio, writing books, producing thousands of YouTube videos, and creating practical biblical resources for people around the world.

Every conversation reminds us that people aren’t looking for perfect marriages.

They’re looking for hope.

They’re looking for examples that healthy marriages still exist.

They’re looking for practical tools that help relationships flourish.

That is why America’s Favorite Couple feels like such a natural next step for us.

This competition gives us an opportunity to introduce countless new people to the message that healthy, Christ-centered relationships are still possible. Every vote, every share, every conversation creates another opportunity for someone to discover resources that could strengthen their marriage or prepare them for one.

Winning would never be about personal recognition.

It would be about expanding our reach so we can serve more communities.

We envision providing additional scholarships for couples who cannot afford coaching. We hope to partner with more churches that desire marriage ministries. We want to publish more books, produce more educational resources, host more live events, and continue equipping future generations with practical, biblically grounded relationship principles.

Healthy marriages strengthen communities.

Strong communities create lasting change.

That’s the legacy we hope to leave.

One of the greatest blessings of our journey has been learning that God rarely wastes our pain. Renée’s childhood experiences, including profound family loss, taught her the importance of resilience, forgiveness, and trusting God’s faithfulness. Gil’s years of military service reinforced the values of discipline, commitment, servant leadership, and perseverance. Together, those experiences have shaped the way we coach, teach, and encourage others.

People often ask us the secret to our marriage.

Our answer is simple.

Believe.

Leave.

Cleave.

Become one.

These four biblical principles have become the framework of our ministry because they reflect God’s design for marriage found throughout Scripture. Healthy marriages don’t happen by accident. They are intentionally cultivated through faith, communication, grace, and a shared commitment to grow together.

Whether we receive the title of America’s Favorite Couple or not, our mission remains unchanged.

We will continue serving.

We will continue writing.

We will continue teaching.

We will continue encouraging couples to pursue God’s design for marriage.

But if this opportunity allows our message to reach even one struggling couple who chooses hope instead of giving up, every vote will have been worthwhile.
